Breaking the 120-publication barrier

Today’s health and nutrition formulators have a wide array of choices when it comes to selecting functional ingredients for new product developments and with consumers becoming more aware, engaged and proactive about managing their health and wellbeing, choosing the ingredients based on proven beneficial attributes has never been more important.

Crucially for brands in the nutrition industry, as consumers have unhindered access to information, never more than a few taps away on a smartphone. As a result, scientific validation is not just a reassurance for shoppers, but a prerequisite, ensuring that the products they choose are effective and reliable.

Scientific validation not only enhances the commercial appeal of a product but also alleviates formulation challenges for product developers. With Bimuno GOS, for example, formulators can rest assured that they are incorporating a prebiotic ingredient with strong scientific support, maximising the appeal to today’s discerning health consumers.

As the market for gut health-supporting products grows, Bimuno® GOS stands out as the most scientifically validated galactooligosaccharide available to formulators. Now, more than 120 scientific publications support its efficacy in areas such as gastrointestinal, digestive and immune health, as well as sports nutrition and cognitive health.

A journey of innovation

Since our inception in 2004, our business has been at the forefront of harnessing science to support gut-mediated wellness, delivered through prebiotic fibre. Our journey began at the University of Reading, with a vision to harness the power of the gut microbiome, and the countless beneficial bacteria that inhabit it, to improve human health and wellbeing. Through dedication to research and innovation, Bimuno was born and we transformed a concept into reality, culminating in the development of what is now the most researched GOS worldwide.

Over the years, our dedicated research and development team has tirelessly worked to expand the scientific understanding of our Bimuno GOS, its interaction with physical and mental health, and its potential as a functional ingredient for the nutraceutical industry.

To showcase the depth and breadth of scientific evidence behind Bimuno GOS, we delve into three recent and exciting studies that highlight its effectiveness in supporting health and wellbeing.

Unlocking synbiotic potential: A collaboration with Probi® AB

One of the most recent publications in 2024, is a groundbreaking synbiotic study conducted in collaboration with probiotic specialist, Probi® AB, whereby Bimuno GOS demonstrated its synergistic potential when combined with two well-established probiotics. These were Probi Digestis® and Probi Defendum®.

The study, published in the International Journal of Nutritional Sciences, showcased the selective utilisation of Bimuno GOS by Probi Defendum, leading to an increase in key immune-supporting metabolites, including SCFA butyrate. Notably, this publication results in one of the first synbiotic concepts on the market to have a proven synergistic effect.

This study not only validates the synbiotic concepts, but also empowers formulators with a powerful tool to create next-generation synbiotic products targeting immune and gastrointestinal health.

Real-World Evidence: gastrointestinal and sleep health

Another recent publication in 2023, was the Real-World Evidence (RWE) study, conducted in collaboration with the Primary Care Society for Gastroenterology (PCSG), provided valuable insights into the potential of Bimuno GOS on gastrointestinal health, particularly in relation to sleep.

The study, published in The Digest, highlighted significant improvements in quality of life among individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), with fewer reported sleep disturbances. Real-world validation shows day-to-day effects that cannot necessarily be replicated in controlled clinical environments, reinforcing Bimuno GOS as a trusted choice for formulators seeking scientifically proven solutions for gastrointestinal and sleep health.

Supporting athlete health

The potential role of Bimuno GOS in sports nutrition was explored in a study published in the European Journal of Sport Science in 2023. Dr. Neil Williams from Nottingham Trent University led a clinical study investigating the effects of Bimuno GOS supplementation on elite athletes.

Indicating the power of prebiotics in supporting immune health in the context of sports, the study revealed a 24% reduction in the duration of respiratory illness among athletes supplemented with Bimuno GOS. Furthermore, athletes experienced lower incidence and severity of gastrointestinal symptoms, highlighting significant potential of Bimuno GOS in sports nutrition formulations.

Embracing the future of gut health

As we celebrate the 120-publication milestone of Bimuno GOS, we remain committed to advancing research in gut-mediated wellness. We continue to explore new frontiers in gut microbiome modulation, empowering formulators to create products that not only meet evolving consumer needs, but also provide solid scientific foundations.
